Tom Takubo and His Political Affiliation and Current Role

Tom Takubo was first elected in to the State Senate in 2014. He is a lifelong member of the Republican Party and a distinguished member of the West Virginia State Senate, representing the 17th District.

Leadership in the West Virginia State Senate

Senator Takubo has demonstrated strong leadership throughout his tenure. On November 26, 2018, he was appointed as the Senate Majority Leader, a position he held for more than six years. Under his leadership in this role, West Virginia had the largest tax cut in state history, the largest private job creators’ investments and funding for both public schools as well as school choice.

Legislative Focus on Public Health and Safety

A practicing dedicated lifelong advocate for public health and safety, Senator Takubo has sponsored several key initiatives aimed at improving community well-being and expanding access to care. In 2024, he introduced two significant bills that were signed into law by Governor Jim Justice: one prohibiting smoking in vehicles carrying children under the age of 16, and another establishing a statewide lung cancer prevention and education program. These legislative achievements reflect his ongoing dedication to protecting the health of West Virginians.

Academic and Professional Background

Before entering public service, Senator Takubo built an extensive career in medicine. A graduate of Chapmanville High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Marshall University in 1995 and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at West Virginia University – Charleston and went on to pursue a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at East Tennessee State University (2004–2007). Following his fellowship, he co-founded Pulmonary Associates of Charleston, where he practiced as a pulmonary, critical care, and sleep specialist, demonstrating both clinical expertise and a deep commitment to patient care. Today, he currently serves as Executive Vice President of Provider Relations at WVU Health System.

Tom Takubo's Entry into Public Office and Electoral Performance

Tom Takubo first successfully ran for public office in 2014, securing his seat in the West Virginia State Senate to represent District 17 with 52% of the vote. His strong electoral performance continued in subsequent elections; he was re-elected in 2018 with a slightly increased 52.5% of the vote, and again in 2022 with an even higher percentage, 58.5% of the vote, indicating growing public support for his work.
